The Challenge

One of the UK’s leading retailers serving millions of customers a year turned to Starfish Construction when one of their stores had been experiencing problems with the asbestos roof for several years. Not only where the issues causing health and safety concerns for staff and customers, but leaks from the roof meant store downtime and a significant drop in revenue. Until engaging with Starfish Construction, the store located in Redruth had been unable to find a suitable Principal Roofing Contractor to undertake the work.

Due to the store being a high traffic large format store, the criteria for the selected contractor was that they had to be able to demonstrate that they could complete the works to a demanding timescale safely, to a high standard, while the store remained fully operational throughout. Our planning team worked closely with the client, to produce a schedule of works that would allow for minimal disruption and address the issues quickly and for the longer term.

Our experience in delivering several projects successfully, of similar scale and complexity, for the client and other clients nationally, we had the knowledge and expertise required, and we were awarded the contract.

We were viewed as the most competent Principal Contractor to deliver on all the client’s criteria after the selective process.

Our in-house design team created all the design elements and drawings for the contract. With our trades teams directly employed and holding the appropriate asbestos training to remove and dispose of the asbestos safely, our client had the confidence that we could meet all health and safety, as well as legislative requirements for the project.

On-going air-monitoring is vital to ensure the safety of all colleagues, shoppers and the environment and we assisted the client throughout this process. At Starfish Construction, we are committed to reducing environmental impacts and this particular client had the same organisational culture of safety and environmental awareness first.

Throughout the project all waste was monitored and reduced where possible.

The completed project was a successful outcome and is one of many support areas we have delivered for retail clients.
